Undercar Services: Maintenance & Repair

SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE approaches caring for your car or truck from the ground up. That means that before we look over the internal components of your ride we take time to make sure that you're working with a solid foundation. Our comprehensive undercar inspections and services cover an important area of your car that can easily be neglected and give the foundation of your vehicle the care and attention it deserves.

Avoid disaster by coming in and having your undercarriage checked out today. Call us at 512-892-2447 or visit us in Austin, TX so we can schedule an appointment to ensure your car is in tip-top shape!

Our competitively priced undercar services include:

Anti-Lock Brakes
Anti-lock brakes prevent wheel lock-up when rapidly decelerating by automatically modulating the brake pressure during an emergency stop. With this system, the wheels are able to maintain traction with the road while braking. Failure of the anti-lock brakes could lead to an increase in the risks of multiple vehicle crashes and run-off road crashes. To avoid this, have your anti-lock brake system checked and repaired by experts. At SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE, we have anti-lock brake experts who will examine and repair your faulty ABS - keeping you safe.

Brakes
A brake is a mechanical device for slowing or stopping a vehicle (usually by means of friction). In short, a brake inhibits your car's motion. It lets you stop the car whenever and wherever you choose. Brakes are one of the most important parts of a motor vehicle. Without them, you would not be able to stop the car. If your vehicle's brakes are having issues, consider having them worked on. Brake experts at SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE can work on your car's brakes to ensure you have a safe drive.

Brake System Flush
Brake fluid is hygroscopic (it absorbs moisture). The absorbed moisture lowers the fluid's boiling point. It also corrodes the lines and cylinders. With the lowered boiling point, the brake fluid could boil during braking which makes you lose braking ability. Although this is an extreme scenario, it does happen in heavy braking. To reduce the effects of the absorbed moisture, auto manufacturers recommend that you have a brake flush done periodically. A brake system flush involves the replacement of used and contaminated fluid with fresh fluid. With SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE's quick lube services, you will have a brake system flush performed by brake experts. Call 512-892-2447 or visit SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE today.

Chassis
A chassis is the car's internal framework that supports the body and other parts like the wheels, engine, transmission, driveshaft, differential, and suspension. A weak or damaged chassis will translate to a weak car. To have a strong and properly working vehicle, have your car's chassis checked for defects. At SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE, there are experienced undercar service providers who can work on your chassis.

Differentials
The differential transfers the engine power to the wheels. One important function of the differential is to pass on power to the wheels while allowing them to rotate at different speeds - thus the name differential. When turning, the outer wheels travel a larger distance than the inner wheels do (also the front wheels travel a longer distance than the rear wheels). This means that all four wheels travel at different speeds during a turn and this is where the differential comes in to help. To make sure your vehicle's differentials are working properly, have them checked regularly. Contact SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE today for differentials examination and servicing.

Differential Flush
The differential is a car part that compensates for the difference in travel distance between the inner wheels and outer wheels when the vehicle is turning. Due to the differential's position in most non-four-wheel-drive (FWD) vehicles (located at the rear and under the car), it does not get any of the star treatment the engine gets. The one thing that every car owner needs to know is that failure of the differential will mean failure of the car. To save the differential from failure, you need to have differential fluid changed every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. Changing the oil on the differential is as important as changing the car's engine oil. Although checking and changing differential oil is pretty easy, you need to visit an auto shop to get a comprehensive differential flush. For differential flush services, visit or call SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE in Austin, TX 78749 today.

Exhaust
In a motor vehicle, an exhaust system is a piping used to guide exhaust fumes away from the engine - usually to the rear of the vehicle. A properly functioning exhaust system not only sounds better, it is better - for you, your car, and the environment. SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE has expert technicians to service your car's exhaust system.

Custom Exhaust
A motor vehicle exhaust system is piping used to guide exhaust gasses away from the engine to the outdoors. Although the exhaust system's main purpose is to guide exhaust gases from the engine to the outdoors, it can be modified to increase engine power, reduce pollution, and reduce noise. To achieve this, you need to invest in a custom-made exhaust system.

At SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE in Austin, TX 78749, we can create a custom-made stainless steel exhaust for your vehicle. We specialize in custom performance exhaust systems, stainless steel mufflers, mufflers, exhaust kits, racing mufflers, and exhaust accessories for a huge and diverse range of vehicles: customized cars, standard road cars, classic cars, kit cars, 4x4's, imports, and racecars.

Driveline
A driveline is a part of your motor vehicle that connects the engine and the transmission to the wheel axles. The driveline consists of the parts of the powertrain less the engine and transmission. Failure of the driveline means that the car would not move since energy cannot be transmitted from the engine to the wheel axles. Therefore, make sure that your car's driveline is regularly inspected and serviced. And, at SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE, you can have the driveline serviced by experts.

Tires
As tires get older, they lose traction and deteriorate from the inside out, increasing the likelihood of a tire bursting. This can cause a rapid loss of control of your vehicle. To have a better performing vehicle, you need to make sure the tires are in good condition. For all your tire needs, contact SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE today.

Shocks
Shocks (or shock absorbers) are mechanical devices designed to smooth out rough roads. The devices do this by converting kinetic energy to another form of energy. Properly working shocks reduce the effect of traveling over rough ground, leading to improved ride quality and vehicle handling. When shocks develop problems, driving on poorly leveled roads becomes unpleasant, and your vehicle may sway when turning. To have your vehicle's shocks diagnosed and repaired, visit SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE today.

Struts
Much like a shock absorber (shocks), your car's struts provide a dampening effect as you travel over a road's surface. By absorbing the shock of the road, struts allow passengers to ride in a car without constant and uncomfortable motion. Struts work a bit differently than shocks in that they provide structural support for your car's suspension. This means that struts support your car's weight, unlike shocks which only regulate the speed at which the weight is transferred. Struts usually last around 50,000 or 60,000 miles. This is simply because the damping characteristics of the parts gradually deteriorate over time. Call SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE at 512-892-2447 if you have questions about the struts on your car. Our expert technicians will diagnose any problems and help you make an informed decision about repairs.

What People Say About Us

Whenever I need something done on one of my cars, this is where I go! I find them to be HONEST and PROFESSIONAL. Rick and Aaron are the best.

  • -Kristen B.

Wow, what a great place. Super nice and helpful guys. They're funny and easy to talk to, and explain things to you really well without talking down to you AT ALL. The shop is tidy and clean. I came in with what I thought was a simple fix, but it turned out to be catastrophic engine failure. :( SW Automotive could have made up anything in an attempt to get more work out of me, but instead, they gave me a bunch of tips about car shopping and how to get into a more reliable car. They even took a quick look at a used car I was test-driving and offered advice on that. Many thumbs up for this place.

  • -Nancy T.

The owner, Rick and his staff are men of integrity, ethics, honest and solid value standards. You will not go wrong with them. I most definitely recommend this automotive repair business! It is top-of-the-mark! I find it outstanding these men actually listen to a woman talk of what seems to be wrong and they take the time to check out every detail.

  • -Ron L.

Have a 2009 Hyundai and engine light came on. Ran my own test and 5 different codes came up, all of which I did not have the ability to repair. Took it to SW Automotive and was prepared for the worst but also heard great things about SWA so prayed for the best. Turns out carbon build up in the fuel lines caused the error codes, $89 and I was out of there!! I am always pessimistic about repair shops as they think they can easily trick me into thinking repairs are needed when they are not. Well SW Automotive now allows me to be optimistic about my future auto repairs.

  • -Jody K.

I took my car to get the oil changed and looked at for some other problems. I was pleasantly surprised at how ethical this place is. They were very honest and seemed interested in saving me money and not just lining their pockets with it. I will definitely be taking my car back there in the future.

  • -Mabyn P.

This review is long overdue since we don't even live in Austin anymore, but I was on here for something else and had some time - that is how good this shop is! I have a 2003 Chrysler T&C van with over 120K miles on it and I think the only reason it is still on the road is bc we found Southwest Automotive through the Car Talk website. My van had so many random, different problems for the 3 years we lived in Austin and SWA helped us keep it on the road for less than a car payment every time. I think Aaron and Rick knew my voice before I said my name by the end, but they were always quick, helpful and reliable. Can't recommend this shop more.

  • -Andrew B.

These guys are great. They are close to home geographically, but they're also close to home in terms of integrity and values. They won't push an unneeded repair on you just to make a buck. In fact, they'll even let you know which repairs are MUST-DOs and which things can wait a bit until your budget catches up. They do quality work, they're good-natured people and they treat your car is if it were their own car. Definitely the right people to trust with your sled.

  • -Sal O.

I found out southwest was near my home so I asked for a quote on a break job and Rick responded quickly after hours. Granted he couldn't get me a quote but he did state he would let me know the next morning. Rick was up front and honest. They ended up having to do a bit more than I planned but it was no surprise and I paid what I had planned. Rick was very pleasant and personable I will be going back.

  • -Suzann V.

Honest guys! Great work! Been coming here since 1998. Thank you!

  • -Anonymous

All my trips to Southwest Automotive have been great experiences - they explain the problem without talking down to me, make rational recommendations for repair (or things to watch out for), have high standards for their mechanical work, and do what they say they're going to do in the time they said and within the estimate provided. I've recommended them to others and they've been just as pleased. Highly recommended!

  • -Micki G.

I bought a groupon to get oil changes from Southwest Automotive Repair and my first experience was great. I got there bright and early got my oil changed and was on my way! I went back my second and third time and once again got in an out and was on my way. The 4th time I came in I noticed a smell in my car and figured it was an air filter. When I got there they took a look and they didn't have my item in stock but they ordered it and I came back later that day they fix it in about 30 mins it was so fast. It's nice to go some where and get the job done and go on about your day. Great customer service.

  • -Adrian G.

    Fast, friendly, and honest!

  • -Barry B.

I have used SW Auto since 1992. First with the previous owner (Bob) and now with Rick, I have never been disappointed with them. They are honest, trustworthy and reliable. If you are looking for discount service this is probably not the place for you but if you are looking for high quality work at a reasonable price, I highly recommend them.

  • -Steven T.

Absolutely the best place to have your vehicle repaired. Very good service reasonable prices. Honest repairs.

  • -Robert S.

Very highly recommended. We had a heater core problem driving on our way to California and not only did they get us on our way quickly, but was also very reasonable on price when they saw we had not much money left from our trip. Some of the BEST SERVICE I've received anywhere in the country.
