Transmission Repair Services

At SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE, we understand the terror that comes with the words "transmission repair" and we want you to know that there is hope after all. Whether manual or automatic, heavy duty or low range, the transmission is a vital part at the center of your vehicle's drivetrain. Your transmission is instrumental in turning the engine's power into forward movement, so it's not surprising that problems with this important component can cripple your car. The experts at SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE have years of experience working on transmissions of all types and sizes. When everything grinds to a halt we have the skills to get you moving forward once more.

One of the easiest ways to avoid a large transmission repair bill is to flush the fluid according to the vehicle manufacturer's guidelines. Your transmission contains a lot of intricate moving parts which can deteriorate quickly if not properly lubricated. SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE's technicians can take a sample of your transmission fluid and determine how long it will be before it's time to renew. When that time comes, we can have you in and out of the shop quickly.

Sometimes our technicians don't get to look at the problem until after something has gone wrong. While this is certainly more serious than a simple transmission fluid change, it doesn't have to spell disaster. At SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE, our expert technicians can carefully disassemble your transmission, identify any faults, and determine whether repairs can be made or not. We utilize an extensive network of parts suppliers, manufacturer knowledge, and expert repair skills to get your transmission repaired, and your vehicle back on the roads of Austin, TX.

At its most basic, your car's clutch allows the engine and gearbox to engage and disengage from each other between gear changes. This means that although the engine's output shaft is still spinning, there is no load on the gears which may cause them to shift improperly. Once the next gear is smoothly selected your clutch will re-engage the engine and gearbox, resuming forward momentum. Over time, and especially in improperly operated manual transmission vehicles, the clutch can become worn and less effective at its job. A damaged clutch can allow the engine and gearbox to re-engage mid-gear change, and this can have serious effects on the health of your transmission. SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE determines the health of your clutch through diagnostic testing as well as test driving. As with a transmission fluid flush, we'll have your car back on the road and your peace of mind stretching for miles.

Another area of our gear-based expertise is your car's differentials. These sit in the middle of your car's axles between the wheels and are vital for a smooth ride. As you turn a corner, the outside wheel has to travel a greater distance than the inside wheel. Without properly functioning differentials, the wheels would turn at the same rate causing your car to vibrate horribly, and struggle to turn whenever you tried to go around a corner. When it comes to examining, diagnosing, and fixing faulty differentials, our experience with transmissions makes SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE the best place to go in Austin, TX.

Avoid transmission disaster by coming in and having your transmission, clutch, and differentials checked out today. Call us at 512-892-2447 or visit us in Austin, TX so we can schedule an appointment to ensure your car is in tip-top shape!

Our competitively priced transmission services include:

Automatic Transmission
Automatic Transmissions shift between gears automatically to optimize driving, and changes gears based on the driver's throttle pedal, vehicle speed, engine speed, and vehicle load. Typical automatic transmissions have 4-5 forward gear ratios, a Reverse, Park, and Neutral gear. Shifting gears occur automatically once the car is in Drive and there is no need for a clutch pedal or gear shift like there is in a Manual Transmission. Automatic transmission repair is complicated based on all the components that make it up, and you need to have any automatic transmission issues properly assessed by auto mechanics. Call 512-892-2447 to talk to the mechanics of SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE about your transmission problems.

Clutches
There are clutches in both automatic and manual transmission cars, and different types of clutches. When shifting gears, the clutch engages and disengages from the flywheel and transfers the torque through the transmission. Clutches should help your vehicle start and shift gears smoothly. The clutch in your car receives a lot of wear and can eventually wear out. If your clutch begins slipping irregularly or is making noises that are raising suspicion, contact SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE to see if clutch replacement is necessary.

Four-Wheel Drive Transmission
A four-wheel (4x4) drive vehicle has differential gears, both front and rear axles, and a transfer case attached to the transmission. Four-wheel drive vehicles demand maintenance on the transfer case, front differentials, rear differentials, and transmission fluids. Visit us on 5905 MCCARTY LN for service on your four-wheel drive transmission services.

Front-Wheel Drive Transmission
If your vehicle has Front-wheel drive, the engine drives the front wheels only. The power is routed through the transmission to the final drive where it is split and sent to the two front wheels through the drive axles. The engine, transmission, and additional hardware is all located in the front of the car. If you are in need, SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE of Austin, TX will gladly repair front-wheel drive transmission vehicles.

Manual Transmission
Driving a vehicle with a Manual Transmission requires using the clutch pedal and gear shift to manually shift gears based on the speed of the vehicle. Manual transmissions have been built with anywhere from two to eight gears. Front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive are the two main configurations for manual transmissions. Typically, manual transmissions require less maintenance then automatic transmissions. At SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE, our auto mechanics can diagnose your vehicle and then recommend the transmission repair or transmission service you need to ensure safety and improve the lifetime of your vehicle.

Transfer Cases
A transfer case is a part of a four wheel drive system found in four wheel drive and all wheel drive vehicles. The transfer case receives power from the transmission and sends it to both the front and rear axles. This can be done with a set of gears, but the majority of transfer cases manufactured today are chain driven. The transfer case is connected to the transmission and also to the front and rear axles by means of drive shafts.Trust the automotive experts at SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE for all your transmission repairs.

Service, Diagnose and Repair
Transmission repair is not something to take lightly. The transmission is connected to key parts of your vehicle and needs to be working properly for your safety. Transmission services include replacing filters and draining fluids to prevent transmission damage. Typical transmission issues that may lead to repair may include shifting issues, slipping, stalling, fluid leaking, and the service light turning on. If you are concerned that you may need transmission repair, don't hesitate to schedule an appointment at SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE today.

Replacement
In motor vehicles, the transmission usually refers to the gear box, which uses gears and gear trains to transmit speed and tourque from a rotating power source to another device. You can have your car's transmission replaced with a new, rebuilt, remanufactured, repaired or used transmission. For more information contact SOUTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE in Austin, TX. Our experienced service technicians can help you make the best decision for your vehicle and your wallet.

What People Say About Us

  • -Carl S.

Whenever I need something done on one of my cars, this is where I go! I find them to be HONEST and PROFESSIONAL. Rick and Aaron are the best.

  • -Kristen B.

Wow, what a great place. Super nice and helpful guys. They're funny and easy to talk to, and explain things to you really well without talking down to you AT ALL. The shop is tidy and clean. I came in with what I thought was a simple fix, but it turned out to be catastrophic engine failure. :( SW Automotive could have made up anything in an attempt to get more work out of me, but instead, they gave me a bunch of tips about car shopping and how to get into a more reliable car. They even took a quick look at a used car I was test-driving and offered advice on that. Many thumbs up for this place.

  • -Nancy T.

The owner, Rick and his staff are men of integrity, ethics, honest and solid value standards. You will not go wrong with them. I most definitely recommend this automotive repair business! It is top-of-the-mark! I find it outstanding these men actually listen to a woman talk of what seems to be wrong and they take the time to check out every detail.

  • -Ron L.

Have a 2009 Hyundai and engine light came on. Ran my own test and 5 different codes came up, all of which I did not have the ability to repair. Took it to SW Automotive and was prepared for the worst but also heard great things about SWA so prayed for the best. Turns out carbon build up in the fuel lines caused the error codes, $89 and I was out of there!! I am always pessimistic about repair shops as they think they can easily trick me into thinking repairs are needed when they are not. Well SW Automotive now allows me to be optimistic about my future auto repairs.

  • -Jody K.

I took my car to get the oil changed and looked at for some other problems. I was pleasantly surprised at how ethical this place is. They were very honest and seemed interested in saving me money and not just lining their pockets with it. I will definitely be taking my car back there in the future.

  • -Mabyn P.

This review is long overdue since we don't even live in Austin anymore, but I was on here for something else and had some time - that is how good this shop is! I have a 2003 Chrysler T&C van with over 120K miles on it and I think the only reason it is still on the road is bc we found Southwest Automotive through the Car Talk website. My van had so many random, different problems for the 3 years we lived in Austin and SWA helped us keep it on the road for less than a car payment every time. I think Aaron and Rick knew my voice before I said my name by the end, but they were always quick, helpful and reliable. Can't recommend this shop more.

  • -Andrew B.

These guys are great. They are close to home geographically, but they're also close to home in terms of integrity and values. They won't push an unneeded repair on you just to make a buck. In fact, they'll even let you know which repairs are MUST-DOs and which things can wait a bit until your budget catches up. They do quality work, they're good-natured people and they treat your car is if it were their own car. Definitely the right people to trust with your sled.

  • -Sal O.

I found out southwest was near my home so I asked for a quote on a break job and Rick responded quickly after hours. Granted he couldn't get me a quote but he did state he would let me know the next morning. Rick was up front and honest. They ended up having to do a bit more than I planned but it was no surprise and I paid what I had planned. Rick was very pleasant and personable I will be going back.

  • -Suzann V.

Honest guys! Great work! Been coming here since 1998. Thank you!

  • -Anonymous

All my trips to Southwest Automotive have been great experiences - they explain the problem without talking down to me, make rational recommendations for repair (or things to watch out for), have high standards for their mechanical work, and do what they say they're going to do in the time they said and within the estimate provided. I've recommended them to others and they've been just as pleased. Highly recommended!

  • -Micki G.

I bought a groupon to get oil changes from Southwest Automotive Repair and my first experience was great. I got there bright and early got my oil changed and was on my way! I went back my second and third time and once again got in an out and was on my way. The 4th time I came in I noticed a smell in my car and figured it was an air filter. When I got there they took a look and they didn't have my item in stock but they ordered it and I came back later that day they fix it in about 30 mins it was so fast. It's nice to go some where and get the job done and go on about your day. Great customer service.

  • -Adrian G.

    Fast, friendly, and honest!

  • -Barry B.

I have used SW Auto since 1992. First with the previous owner (Bob) and now with Rick, I have never been disappointed with them. They are honest, trustworthy and reliable. If you are looking for discount service this is probably not the place for you but if you are looking for high quality work at a reasonable price, I highly recommend them.

  • -Steven T.

Absolutely the best place to have your vehicle repaired. Very good service reasonable prices. Honest repairs.

  • -Robert S.

Very highly recommended. We had a heater core problem driving on our way to California and not only did they get us on our way quickly, but was also very reasonable on price when they saw we had not much money left from our trip. Some of the BEST SERVICE I've received anywhere in the country.
